Getrag 265 Close-Ratio 5-Speed Gearbox

Getrag supplied BMW M-division with the 265 5-speed close-ratio gearbox for the E30 M3 and E28 M5 — the two most celebrated performance BMWs of the 1980s. The Getrag 265 is specific to M-spec applications, with tighter ratio spacing than the standard 265 used in lesser BMWs. Its short-throw dog-leg first gear (lower-left on the H-pattern) was ideal for track use. The same gearbox served both the E30 M3's 2.3L four-cylinder and the E28 M5's 3.5L inline-six, demonstrating Getrag's ability to match a single transmission to wildly different engines.
