The VW Type 02A is the 5-speed manual transaxle used in every front-wheel-drive performance Golf and Scirocco from the GTI Mk1 through the Golf Mk2 GTI 16V. Volkswagen's discipline in using the same transaxle family across 15 years means GTI Mk1, Scirocco, and Golf Mk2 GTI owners share the same syncronizer rings, gear clusters, and differential. The 02A was the most-reproduced sports gearbox of its era, with aftermarket close-ratio gear sets, limited-slip differentials, and billet shift forks all shared across applications.
